Idea:

Add http://www.atareao.es/ubuntu/conociendo ... ria-cache/ freecache.py to the boot programs to avoid the excessive RAM cache grow.

Perhaps it can be improved, but basically, if ram cache grows a lot it dumps it restart it.

@mitcoes:
You are welcome.

By the way, I would like to ask you...
Has your system which has 4GB RAM frozen due to RAM cache growing?

Even when my system had 4GB RAM, it had never frozen due to RAM cache growing.

If I was getting system crashes as the cache grew, I would be running a memtest as I would suspect a bad ram chip.

Thanks kazztan0325 for fixing my mistake in the link.

I do understand how RAM works, and one of the top linux bloggers in spanish investigated it - a lot of others told me I'm a fool - and what I say is true, RAM cache grows until freezes system - I have 4 Gb of RAM -.

As I am only a semi-advanced user, el atareao explains better how he made the test, in order you can reproduce it.

This script - that can be modified to be better, because all can be improved - clean the RAM cache only when it is too much that freezes system.

It is not made to avoid the RAM cache, only to avoid that it grows to a size that would be able to freeze the system.

If any distro would put it as default starting programs, it will work better. But sometimes there are non scientific defense of what does not work.

Test it and tell me more.

After @Kazztan0325 fixed your link and @trollboy commented.

The article describes a particular instance of an issue EG: Does not pertain to ANY of MintLinux and therefore irrelevant.

Its necessary to understand how things work in the OS before suggesting and subjecting modifications to any system.

If you are concerned about the amount of memory that is being used and want to increase the swap file, use this article

http://www.ehow.com/how_7366555_use-memory-linux-os-pc.html

You can use a USB Drive for additional memory.

Linux uses free memory as buffers and caches to speed things up. It will dump what's needed for real work from the cache when it's required by the system.

If you think about it, if your memory isn't being used then you may as well pull it out of the computer and put it on your desk. It's as much use but at least it's something to look at!
