Idea:

Start recomending other distros to base their OS off mint instead of ubuntu and debian. Many beginer distros on distro watch based on ubutu and debian if we show people a better base alternative we can probaly grow the amount of donations linux mint gets from the comunity.

Until Mint completely houses its own full distro repositories, this would be impossible. As it stands, Mint is little more than a patch and some extra tools layered on top of Ubuntu or Debian. Take Ubuntu or Debian away, and you're left with no OS base.

You could ask these distros to include Mint's tools and configurations in their repos as well, but what would be the purpose, beyond turning the others into Mint clones? Find a way for Mint to fully support its own OS base without adding heaps of extra work for the Mint team, and you'll have a good idea here.

To Sannaj.
For #1 it dempends on the distro.

For #2 They may or may not know about mint.

For #3 That depends on the goal of the distro.

This was to be a case by case. Some distros would do better with out switching to mint. Some would not.

Some beginer distros would benifit from mint inorder to prevent redundent work.

First of all: What's the advantage of Mint for having a lot of distros based on it?

Second: Why do the other distro's like to change to base on Mint after you advised them doing so, if they haven't done this step on their own

Final: What would make the Mint-Derivates different to Linux Mint itself?

-------------------------------

Cinnamon, the "Mint DE", is a different topic. This is only one aspect of the system, witch could be useful for a lot of distros. Also a wide use of Cinnamon would help it to develop and takes away work from the Mint Developers.

Sorry quake0, but you have to remember that Mint is largely composed from the code of other distros. I have never read what percentage of code in Mint is actually from Mint and what percentage from the parent distro, but as a wild guess I would think about 90%/10%. So why would anyone want to base their distro on something that is only 10% original?

If you look at this site (and ignore the import directory) you will see how much of Mint12 is actually produced by Mint.

What benefits do you imagine other distros are going to get from doing this rather than using the parent distro directly?

Clearly it would not work for ever distro, but many distros benefit.

Community recommendations. We could go on forums, and email developers. I myself have emailed developes of diffrent distros, but I am only one person. Also would not hurt if The mint website had a page showing the benifits of using Mint and Mint DE as the base for their OS.
