Idea:

Perhaps the greatest single productivity-boosting feature in Linux is the ability to open several virtual desktops at one time. The multiple desktops let you focus on the task at hand without interruption, but switch to your other active workspace with a single click.

This idea taken from the PCLinuxOS forum is about the "activity-focused virtual desktop layout designed to address typical user-needs/tasks, make their life easy, and working on the computer straightforward and fun".

There should be at least 6 virtual desktops where you can find all you need for a group of tasks directly on each desktop:

Desktop 1 - Internet
The first desktop (the default one) may be filled with groups of icons to launch/install various web browsers, Mozilla Prism and Nickel based on Chromium, several e-mail clients, some chat clients, some IM clients, torrent clients, download managers, etc.

Desktop 2 - Office
The second desktop could present some groups of icons for office-related tasks, like all the OpenOffice.org apps and other useful office apps like kile, scribus, etc.

Desktop 3 - Games
There should be a selection of the best games that could be installed by clicking on the icons shown on this virtual desktop.

Desktop 4 - Multimedia
The program launchers on this desktop for the software that may be used to listen to or convert music, watch/make DVDs, or some other multimedia task.

Desktop 5 - Graphics
Desktop icons for the best software that is included in the default installation or can be installed from the repositories. There should be some software categories related to scanning, post-process, draw, etc.

Desktop 6 - System
All the tools retated to system information, administration, configuration should be available on this desktop.

I must admit I miss my old Gnome 2 desktop with 4 + desktops always easily available down in the system bar.

FullMonty 2011.01 is available since February, 9th. Indeed, it works fine for me.

FullMonty 2010.09 is available with the latest stable version of the KDE Software Compilation.

What do you think about an equivalent Linux Mint edition with the regular KDE installation + the special desktop layout + many applications and drivers preinstalled in one full DVD?

Anyone interested in this idea should try the KDE implementation based on PCLinuxOS (click on this link to see the screenshots and scroll that forum page to find the download links at the top) and give feedback to the developers.

I think this idea should be optional, as its a big change from the norms and that can scare new users away. But i think its an awesome idea!

I like that. Obviously enabling this should be an option
living with the actual approach.

The idea is good, but it seems 'not right' to induce the user to have such things pre-packed, but else to provide easy ways for himself to configure such virtual environments, a wizard perhaps
