@RayWoods: raises an interesting point in his idea for a moderation button http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/787, which is that spam tends to come from accounts that are artificial.

My idea is to link community accounts to the Mint desktop in that accounts can only be created by someone running an actual Mint distro. This would be similar to applications that ask you to create an account for registration or support purposes when first installed, and would require a small desktop application to be created that links back to the community website here.

Similar suggestions have been made before in order to automatically gather the hardware information for the user's profile and this could also be incorporated, but the main purpose would be to try and prevent spam accounts being created here.

I envisage the application not being compulsory, and allowing for existing accounts to be used for secondary installs.

I now think we should try and keep the Community as open as possible and, with the increase in numbers of Moderators the chance for spam to stay up long has been dramatically reduced.

Can't the spammers just spoof the distro?

2: zaenal1234 : it's not argument for avoiding spam and to continue on frankeinstein's thought even more it's bu...s...t for avoiding spam to force use just Mint to get more info about Mint ;-)

I like this idea. As a user of Mint for 2 years, it would be nice to think that new users of Mint looking for information from experienced Mint users, are indeed getting information from people who actually use it.

I agree with this idea, to avoid spam.

@Heltonbiker: yes that's correct, I wasn't suggesting one had to be using Mint to access this site.

Well, I think the author suggests to CREATE accounts from Mint only, but LOGIN to the already created account from any computer. Good idea!

I think this idea has some merit. It would definitely prevent a lot of bogus spam accounts. The only problem might be that, if a spammer is really diligent enough and WANTS to mess up this system, they could always install Mint in order to spam the Mint community. But that's a lot of work for small result, so it wouldn't be common, if anything.

The only problem would be someone logging in to the internet through another computer, (say at work), not their primary Linux Mint Box. I would assume however that most Linux Mint users do have access to the internet on their Linux Box so they could easily get past this stumbling point and, should they not have web access I'm sure we could make special arrangements through a moderator.

However the one common factor with the vast majority of spam like intrusions to our community is the total lack of information in their profiles.
