@Rovanion: interesting points. Not to tackle right now, but I'd like to keep them in mind and fix them soon.

@Suhana: There was a problem with Grub, I cleaned things up and fixed 5 critical bugs. I'll upload the new ISO tonight.

Here goes some initial impressions as long with questions and critiques:

About the system installer:

  • The English names of the countries are listed.
  • Is there really a need for selecting keyboard model, I tought that was automaticly detected?
  • Keyboard layout cannot be choosen, just language. I use the sublayout Dvorak to may Swedish layout, that is currently impossible choose. Refrence: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/2-blog-pics/ubuntu-install-pic4.png
  • Types for normal harddrives should be added, just like for USB's.

About the mint tools:

  • Why does the application installer, the update mananger and the system installer all start at in the middle of the screen? This is most actual for the Update Mananger and the Software Mananger. All three ignores the rules of the window mananger and starts in the middle of the screen blocking other windows instead of placing themselves on empty space which is the default behaviour of both KWIN and Metacity in mint.

Got to go, will write more on a later release.

Failing the ISO and working on a new one. Can someone test the "All applications" test case? Also, can I get more info on "detect other OSes" and the Grub problem?

Actually, the build number would be better in iso label.

Summary of problems so far:

  • Python import gi problem
  • Installer fails to create user if real name contains space chars
  • Installer sometimes fails to setup Grub properly (need more traces to understand why)
  • Installer fails to detect other OSes (always? need more info from testers)
  • Missing MP3 encoder
  • CD Audio should launch Rhythmbox, not VLC
  • Debian Unofficial needs to be removed from sources.list
  • wireless-tools need to be installed by default
  • build number should appear in isolinux

@Suhana: Don't use tee, only run the script in terminal. Also, it looks like your partition is already mounted and stuck in its configuration. You should reboot your VM and try to install again.

Note: The installer may contain bugs (it's quite new). To get more info on whatever goes wrong (if something happens), don't run it using the desktop shortcut, open a terminal and type "sudo /usr/lib/live-installer/main.py".

Sorry about this... after two months in France I had forgotten what plastic broadband was like. Silly me, thinking I could upload an ISO from Ireland during the day :)

Anyway, the upload finished during the night, so the server is now seeding the torrent, and I modified the link above to provide you with a direct HTTP download.

Happy testing everyone ;)

Wow my download speed slowd to 2.7kb/ sec. This is not good. :-(

I actually have it downloading now. I could not get it to start this morning before I went to work. BUt now seems to be downloading.

It's been downloading for six and a half hours and I am not even half way there yet. Transmissions now says, "remaining time unknown". I will wait and see what happens.

Another point:

  • It doesn't fit on a CD. Due to the experimental nature of this project, this wasn't considered a priority. This ISO therefore comes with the same selection as the DVD edition of Mint (including Java, VLC...etc).

During the development I noticed I couldn't play FLV files. This problem seems to have been solved, but I'm not sure why nor how...  so we should keep an eye on this as well.

General Notes:

  • After a whole night of uploading the ISO (the broadband is a joke around here) the MD5 was incorrect. So while it's uploading through Torrent I put the link to the torrent here instead of the ISO.
  • This module only takes numeric values as build numbers. In the case of Debian, here, the correct build number is actually 20100829D. This is just a detail, but it will help identify the ISO uniquely if we ever look at this page again in the future.

Known problems:

  • It comes with no splash. Usplash is becoming obsolete and Plymouth isn't stable enough.
  • Grub wasn't pinned. We're still using the Debian Grub, so the boot entry is "LinuxMint" as defined in LSB instead of "Linux Mint Debian" as defined in /etc/linuxmint/info.
  • There's a known issue with Python, sometimes you'll see mintMenu complain about an import on a gi module.
  • The installer is only in English at the moment.
  • The partitioner's graph in the installer doesn't refresh itself, so if a window or a dialog goes over it, it only redraws if you resize the installer's window.
  • mintUpdate is the same than in the other editions, it wasn't adapted specifically for Debian yet.
  • SimpleCompizConfig, usb-creator and jockey-gtk are missing, we'll need to port or write alternatives for them.
  • software-properties-gtk needs rebranding, in particular it shows a stats and an update tab which don't apply to Mint.
