@Justin: I'll try to give this one a clean fstab as well. Improvements to the installer will have to wait though.. I really want to switch the focus towards Mint 11.

@Rovanion, @Justin: Good points, I usually refuse to apply updates, but we're on LMDE here... so there's no reason for it to be in sync with the previous ISOs releases in Dec and Jan. I'll upgrade the disc to the latest packages.

Rejecting this one.

Sorry for not posting earlier, I have some things I will be posting later (have notes on my personal computer).

I agree with Rovanion the iso should be updated, even if this means a new round of regression testing.  The iso is 942 mb, and the batch of updates I encountered as of yesterday was 497mb, making for a 1439mb download overall.  This is 53% of the iso being downloaded all over again, and by download volume, on par with the KDE iso as far as initial setup is concerned.  This is also starting to become out of the hands of those who have unstable internet connections or those who lack high speed connectivity.  Bearing in mind several people will likely want this iso who are in this situation, they may decide to look elsewhere instead, especially those who pay per the GB of data downloaded.

There are issues with the dependency based booting as well, which Rovanion has also referenced.  This is likely to confuse new users and we should do the best we can to minimize our impact in this regard.

I have written a quick sed one-liner which we can apply to live-installer to edit the /etc/fstab after copying the system over to remove the dirty fstab entries which are still present.

We need to make a decision to edit the installer to better adequately support the BTRFS option - this is broken in the current state because it does not notify the user they still require an ext* partition to at least boot from, as GRUB in the current state does not handle booting from BTRFS as far as I know.  Ubiquity makes the suggestion, and the live-installer should too.

I've also been having issues with deadlock in mintupdate after applying said round of 500 updates above, where the updater shows perpetual checkmark despite having updates to download.

We also need to decide on a way to localize mirrors relevant to the users locale, as the standard mirror is still capped at a very slow rate.  One can get over 20x the speed of the standard mirror by localizing.

I will be posting more as I come along them and get my notes handy.

Thank you.

In case you haven't done so already, you should absolutely upgrade the distribution CD's from the repositories. When I updated from this version to current I had to manually choose whether to keep or update config files no less than four times.

This is not something that an average user is capable of determining on their own.

I fixed the following issues:

  • Window borders are green
  • There is nothing bound to the print-screen button.
  • Audio CD triggers the wrong application

Just testing a few things and uploading the new ISO in a few minutes.

@Rovanion: That GPG error is to do with Opera adding its own repository on your behalf and failing at registering its own key when you install it. It's not specific to LMDE, it happens in all Debian based distros, and we'll be repackaging Opera going forward because of this.

Rovanion

@clem What about the GPG error? there seems to be a key missing.

And I would look into a theme called Axiom for XFCE, it does the job great for me: http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/axiom+xfwm?content=90145

@all:

This release aims at porting Xfce to LMDE, not bring improvements to it. We'll improve the installer and many aspects of LMDE in due time and accross all LMDE ISOs at the same time.

Issues kept so far:

  • Window borders are green
  • There is nothing bound to the print-screen button.
  • Why is Gnome Terminal used instead of the XFCE terminal?
  • Audio CD triggers the wrong application

Will we switch over to dependency-based booting?

Right now the user is based with this choice when updating their system.

Got the fallowing error when updating package lists:

W: GPG-fel: http://deb.opera.com stable Release: Följande signaturer kunde inte verifieras för att den öppna nyckeln inte är tillgänglig: NO_PUBKEY A2019EA84E7532C8

Also, a lot of packages are outdated, I would recommend updating the package base until the next spin.

Live DVD compatibility mode didn't work. Last displayed message was: clocksource tsc unstable (delta=169623409  ns). Every other menu selection passed.

The grub menu on the muti-boot shows this as GNU linux just like LMDE without Xfce or 32bit displayed. Running grub-update in the LMDE install finds this install as Linus Mint Xfce however.

Lsb and Info didn't list number of bits or codename as listed in the test. I marked it pass but it is up to clem if this is correct for Xfce ??? LMDE?

After the installation /etc/fstab is populated with devices with their /dev/sdX names instead of their UUID's. UUID's should be used because they are unique to each device and thus averts issues that can occur if devices are added or removed from the computer.

The System and Settings submenus contains a lot of things that don't belong there. There's no order.

One update worked. However, down loading the 500 plus that were available cuased the install to hang at the end -all night. System monitor indicated everything but sysmon was sleeping. Decided to do a reboot beause nothing would respond (that menu selection took a while to come up). In the long run I had to do a dpkg --configure -a to fix the broken packages and finish the install.

The Linux Mint Debian Edition Installer does not allow to choose variant of keyboard layouts. It only allows to choose main group of layouts, that being the name of your country. This results in many users being unable to choose their proper layout.

The choice of keyboard model on the other hand seems irrelevant since, atleast in every other installer I've encountered, it is automaticly detected. And as far as my experience goes, so is it in the LMDE installer.

One other thing is that most newcommers won't know the exact name of the variant of their keyboard. So there has to be some sort of guided tour to finding this out. One example of such a function is present in the Ubuntu installer where the user is asked to press a series of keys on their keyboard and the correct layout is choosen for the user as deduced from that input.

In the partitioner some labels were hidden from my view: http://i.imgur.com/f2lqX.png

The "select where to install Linux Mint" part should warn the user that the partitions selected for formatting, devX and devY, will have all their data remove permanently.

Once the installer window is made larger by scaling the window it cannot be made smaller again. This is both ugly and can in some situations result in the installer having to be restarted because the window becomes so large that the buttons get outside of the screen.

Some bad labeling: "Please select where you want to install Linux Mint Debian edition"; It should be Linux Mint XFCE Debian Edition. By the way, the labeling is getting messy.

When setting username and password the label is: "Please indicate your name and select a username, password and a hostname". Change the word indicate to something less vague like type. Since the language of the installer does not change when language is choosen, this whole installer has to be understandable for every non-english speaker installing LMXFCEDE.

When the user types his password in the first field, the Passwords do not match worning appears. It shouldn't appear until the user has finished typing in the second field, not until focus leaves that second field.

Hostname should be automatically filled in derived from the username. So if my username is Rovanion the hostname should be autofilled to something like RovanionMint. And do really hostnames have to be lowercase? I use a hostname with uppercase characters on my Arch.

Other notes:

  • There is nothing bound to the print-screen button.
  • Why is Gnome Terminal used instead of the XFCE terminal?
  • Sound did not work on my setup.
  • The System category in the menu is a mix of the Administration category in Gnome and normal tools like the file mananger Thunar.

Active windows-borders are currently green unlike the Gnome edition where they stay grey.

Is this the way it's going to stay or would it be an idea to keep the borders grey, only highlighting buttons and text when a window becomes active?

@clem Are you planning to add a Plymouth theme to LMDE?

clem understood about the menu.

I can get it in 38 minutes from here (450KB/s). I'm in Ireland though... quite close to this UK server.

@all: if it's slow via HTTP, try to get it via FTP. Let me know if this is an issue. I can switch the dev server to another box if needed.

@Rovanion: Check the MD5

@cpatrick08: Yes, no 750 policy on this one. New strategy for LMDE: ala Debian, all editions share the same repositories.... i.e. 500 policy for Debian, 700 for LMDE.

@cpatrick08: usb-creator isn't ported to LMDE yet. startupmanager isn't needed since there's no plymouth by default in LMDE.

@newW2: Until now mintMenu's been developped specifically for Gnome. It will evolve in the future to be smarter and adapt its feature not only to Gnome but to Xfce and other desktops. But for now, it's there for people to have fun with, not as the default menu but an alternative. Its main features work fine but expect a few things to break nonetheless... :)

@cpatrick08: According to my tests, once you've launched OpenOffice.org and Firefox you use approximately the same amount of RAM than if you were running Mint 9 XFCE without any apps open.

yea it runs fast is there a way to slow it down a little bit

Well btrfs wasn't going to work with only one partition on a multi-boot linux ... it got stuck on stuck on the boot loader task forever; finally had to quit out. Started over on formated to ext4 and all is working ...  well it booted and a played a little. However, need to be up at 4-AM, so by the time I can look again there will be test results by you all. It seems to run fast.

Tried mint menu from gnome; no control center.

@Rovanion: Not necessarily. It would be nice as a plus of course, but in the scheme of things it's not a priority. I'll explain later the reasons for the Xfce edition to become more mainstream and there's also technical reasons linked with language support and Debian that make it more difficult for this edition to fit on a CD. As the poll illustrates, most people aren't limited to CDs nowadays but to DVDs or USB sticks which are both well able to cope with 1GB of data. Just to give you an example, it's more important to a lot of people to have the essential build and dev packages and to ensure a proper connection to the Internet and the ability to compile wireless drivers than fitting within 700MB. Having said that, if I find space somewhere I'll definitely try to make it smaller, and if it does go under 700MB then even better... but that's not as important as other aspects of the edition.

Rovanion

The plan is to trim this down into the sub 700MB range right?

clem

This is "Linux Mint Xfce". As you can see it's got no version number... it's rolling and based on LMDE. You'll also notice it comes with OpenOffice, VLC, Firefox, Thunderbird and about the same selection of software as the Gnome edition. It also comes with mintMenu, which you can add to the panel in replacement of the Xfce menu. The live session fits in about 100MB RAM, this is a new direction for this edition.. there's much to talk about but I'll stop here as I'm curious to get your unbiaised feedback on it first.

Enjoy and happy testing!
