kexec-tools is confusing a lot of people at the moment :) I had a look at the forums' LMDE section and it's at the center of most topics out there.

I got auto launch to work by going into Xfce 4 Settings Manager, Removable Drives and Media and selecting, "Mount removable media when inserted".  DVDs play when inserted, a choice was given for a music CD and Rythmbox played it.

Thanks exploder, I'm trying that now.

Oh and looked at my fstab - no swap listed on the drive XFCE is on. And adding it and doing swap on did nothing for the audio cd launch. Swap on for sda drive fixed the audio launching in R'box.

I removed kexec - and of course saw it as soon as I opened my eyes better.

By the way another thing on this grub and reboot issue. It seems only to affect Debian based DEs.

newW2, kexec-tools was pulled in with the package updates, just remove it and the system will re-boot normal again.

I went back to Xfce in Mint 9 to make sure this ROM drive wasn't the issue. No problems with Mint 9 Xfce.

I was more curious about the following, and since I was on break from house chores, I investigated some fun I was having with booting as well. You see I thought it was the combination of updating-grub2 and then updating LMDE through mint update. I didn't see any errors but it did complain that there were more updates that needed to be made (some additional libs as I recall). However, I was able to boot into Debian Xfce x64 ( on sdb7) from grub on sda but not LMDE. In fact it appeard that there was something really hosed with the main edition. The drive light would just turn on/off very fast and if I tried to get to a tty an error code would flash by quicker than grease lightning, so after trying the irqpoll switch in the boot line of grub (a fail). I decided to reinstall grub2 on sda. That fixed the LMDE boot issue and so I went on to test.

This is long but hopefully helpful. So the next problem showed up (or got through my thick skull) during the last bit of testing and then going on to add some other s/w to Debian Xfce. I noticed that when I commanded a reboot from the menu or the terminal then NO grub - just a boot straight into Debian Xfce (it acts just like ctrl+alt+backsapce). So the point of this long story is the Mint 9 Xfce not only auto launches Exaile when I put an audio cd in teh ROM drive, I can also reboot / restart (from the menu or terminal) and I get the grub menu and I can select a different DE install.

<meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="content-type" />

So a couple of other more risky tests  were made. If I'm in Debian XFCE and press the reset button on the PC I don't see grub and it acts just like ctrl+alt+backsapce. If I shut down or hold the power to force the shut down, I get a grub menu when the the computer is powered back on.

There's two issues that are non-blocking:

  • Inserting a DVD doesn't automatically launch VLC
  • There's no way to bypass the trash and delete a file permanently (this was done by Merlwiz in the past and it will be added again in the future, it just didn't make it here)

I'm surprised about the Audio CD. In my tests it launched Rhythmbox sucessfully... I'll try it again just to make sure. I wouldn't consider it a blocking issue at this stage but I'm pretty sure I addressed that before the RC.

I had massive problems with the settings for sound in the 32 bit version. Once I got the volume control and mixer settings correct I could play a DVD an a music CD. I also had to launch the application I wanted to use. VLC will not open any type of disk on my machine... Could be my hardware...

Another thing, and it may be my inexperience with xfce: audio CD doesn't auto launch in any player included.
