I to was caught by how fast this tested out. I have family visiting, so I was a bit busy. I did however get a chance to boot the liveCd last night. All I can say is woot!  This has a wow factor that will be noticed and appreciated by the many that aren't ready to dive into Gnome 3. Can't wait to see more.

Note: evolution-data-server is needed for gnome-about-me to run.

@Ajay: Likely to be upstream. For the Intel/nVidia/ATI tests we want to make sure the kernel is alright, i.e. that it can boot the liveCD fine and that it manages to boot on the installed system post-installation.

AJAY-TECH

Ok So i have it installed and running on intel chipset.

And just went to enable desktop cube, and as usual it said do you want to disable desktop wall to use desktop cube. I clicked yes and then it lost all settings and selections from compiz.

I will restart and see if i can recreate.

  • In isolinux the menu says "check for the integrity of the DVD" instead of "check for the integrity of the CD"

clem

@Merlwiz: neat trick, I gained 3MB on each ISO with these (which is a lot considering the compression).

clem

Note: For the Intel, ATI, nVidia tests don't rely on Ubuntu. These were introduced because in one of our ISOs the live kernel didn't match the one in squashfs. Although we usually to stick to the same kernel as Ubuntu we build our ISOs differently and we sometimes reinstall the kernel (I did for this ISO for instance).

Thanx Clem! Hope you slept well! smiley

Thanks Merlwiz.

avasili: don't worry there's 3 more ISOs coming up :)

Hi to everyone... Congratulations Clem. You all have been so fast in testing the iso. I checked the site before going to bed at 23.30 (Albania time) now 8.00 o'clock in the morning everything tested. wow surprise. Hope I could get my hands on the 64bit iso for testing. It will be a pleasure! Clem, if there is anything alse I could do with my hardware for this iso... I will be glad to! :)

Thank you very very much for your hard work!

You can save some space by deleting

/var/cahce/debconf/*.dat-old

/var/lib/aptitude/*.old

/var/lib/dpkg/*-old

Also you can remove some packages to add get  more space.

Testing on an intel chipset now just via live cd since as exploder said 11.04 runs.

+1 to the rc vote

+1 to that Exploder, this is ready for the members. :-)

exploder

Looks like we have a release candidate ;-)

Good job Clem, this OS runs very well.

I had same results Exploder, no go on Apple site but was able to play quicktime video form another site.

exploder

I passed the Intel Chipset test, everything is in place for it and it works in 11.04 so there is no reason why it would not work the same here.

exploder

I got a quicktime music video to play, Apple's movie site would not play... Oh well.

clem

I'm going to bed (2am here), just two more things you might want to know:

  • Apple doesn't like people watching apple.com/trailers without quicktime. I had problems with this site, so it's probably best to find some other website to test quicktime playback.
  • To switch the CD ripping from OGG to MP3 in Banshee, click on Edit->Preferences->Source Specific->Source->AudioCD. It took me a while to find that option so hopefully that saves you some time :)

tty tomorrow ;)

Ok now downloading at better speeds after restarting into the download manager.

Ajay: The server's in London but still.. you should get more than that. I'm getting 450KB/s from here (I'd probably get more if it wasn't for my slow connection). Try to restart your download.

AJAY-TECH

Still downloading is there a faster way? And sounds like black splash screen shall be good.

clem

The reason the test was there initially was because of a bug in Rhythmbox's jamendo plugin that we had to fix in every release :)

clem

There are Jamendo/Magnatune plugins available but they're not enabled by default. They're also not as good as they were in Rhythmbox. It's a trade-off but there's other online archives to make up for it.

mmesantos1

Yes I just noticed there is no Jamendo/Magnatune plugins in this audio player.

clem

I'm confident the black splash screens will raise a few eyebrows but eventually be popular. The RC will hopefully confirm this :)

clem

@exploder: How did you test the printer test page? With a real printer? If so, did it mention which file it was printing for the test? I thought this test would fail...

exploder

I passed the plymouth tests because they are intentionally blacked out. After working with the 11.04 base I can certainly understand why this change was introduced.

clem

Yes, looks like I'll need to go through the tests and update a few things ;)

clem

You can also ignore Jamendo/Magnatune.

mmesantos1

OK then I will pass the Plymouth splash screens then, may want to update test info for future testers though.

clem

@mmesantos: I'll update the test. It can be passed successfully. It's there to make sure these apps aren't branded with Ubuntu artwork. Both gimp and libreoffice feature their own splash screens so it's ok.

clem

@mmesantos: yes.

mmesantos1

For the Office and Gimp test, not sure how we look at it, GImp not installed by default and now using Libre Office, how do you want us to handle this test with MInt 11 Gnome CD version Clem?

clem

The black splash screen is by design, it's there to give the boot sequence a more continuous look. On installed system Plymouth kicks off too late, flickers and the boot sequence is too short for it to be of use... not to mention the problems/bugs it's been having since it's been adopted, with ATI/nVidia graphics. Some people might miss it, but it's a matter of adaptation, both grub and gdm feature the same artwork, and if grub isn't shown it's in line with the black splash screen. All in all, this makes a more unified boot sequence and it makes the OS look more pro and elegant.

The only potential issue is with the live session, because booting from the CD takes much more time.. but there again it's ok as people can hear the CD being read, the HDD lights flashing and the system loading.

Text, errors and queries should appear in either green or white, we're simply hiding the brand and the dots.

exploder

Thanks Clem, just wanted to be sure.

mmesantos1

So should I pass the plymouth test then Clem?

clem

Sorry, I forgot to mention, Plymouth is 100% black in Mint 11, both text and graphical versions.

For the codecs the best thing is to add them post-installation. Also notice how the menu item for the codecs disappear after they're installed.

exploder

We sould insall the codecs and the rest to complete all of the tests shouldn't we?

mmesantos1

Booting from Live CD gives me all black screen. Same with text boot for plymouth splash. Test Fail

mmesantos1

Ok Clem downloading now.

AJAY-TECH

Thanks for the info downloading now at 44.7kb/s hopefully i can test it once it downloads

This is the 32-bit liveCD of Linux Mint 11.

Linux Mint 11 RC will feature these ISOs in 32-bit and 64-bit:

- a liveCD (no extra apps, no codecs)
- a liveDVD (all extra apps, all codecs)

The stable Linux Mint 11 will also feature:

- an OEM CD (no extra apps, no codecs)

When extra apps and codecs are missing:

- a menu item is present in Sound & Video called "Install Multimedia Codecs" (which installs all missing codecs)
- a menu item is present in Administration called "Upgrade to the DVD Edition" (which installs all extra apps)

Extra apps include:

- Additional themes, icons and backgrounds (mintinstall-icons, gnome-wise-icon-theme, shiki-wise-theme, mint-elementary-icons, mint-backgrounds-katya-extra)
- VLC
- Gimp
- Giver (giver, libX11-dev)
- Tomboy
- Libreoffice-base and libreoffice-help-en-us
- Java (sun-java6-plugin)
- Samba (nautilus-share, samba, samba-common-bin, smbclient)
- Fonts (ttf-dejavu, ttf-dejavu-extra, ttf-wqy-microhei)

There's a known upstream bug in Virtualbox which prevents the theme from being applied once the system is installed. There's a workaround for it and it will be documented in the release notes.

I couldn't test the following:

- The windows version of usb-creator.exe
- The printer test page

Everything else should work as expected.

I'd like to get this ISO tested in case you find something, before I upload the 64-bit CD ISO and the 32-bit and 64-bit DVD ISOs.

Happy testing and many thanks for helping out!
