Sounds good Clem! 40 degrees celsius is pretty darn hot, it's real hot here too. Things will all work out in the end and I hope where your going has good air conditioning!

OK... this is not going the way I wanted :)

I'm in the middle of France, computer installed in a kitchen, 40 degrees heat, public wifi (from which I can't upload anything) and moving places in 2 days... I was hoping for a smooth RC release.

But let's face it, we're looking at changes in:

  • The installer, and grub
  • The kernel itself

These are amongst the most critical components so there's no way we're leaving any doubt go towards the final release. These changes need to be done prior the RC.

I've rolled out 4 new ISOs with a new installer:

  • Grub can now be installed on any partition/hdd
  • selecting a locale translates the installer on the fly
  • I also added some visual improvements to it

They all include the latest translations (which means mintupdate-debian comes with support for other languages than English) and the latest theme (which supports GTK3).

Last but not least, the 32-bit ISOs use a 486 kernel.

I'll test all these tomorrow morning, I'm not sure how I'll upload them, but I'll find a way ;)

You can't use a pae kernel by default because it will not work with most systems that have under 4 GB of RAM, sometimes it will work but usualy it will not. This is why most distros don't ship with the pae kernel by default. I have remasterd using the pae kernel in the past and unfortunately, it is hit and miss with systems that have under 4 GB of RAM.

My specs are:

AMD Athlon II duel core @ 2.9 GHz

Biostar NForce Mainboard

3 GB Corsair DDR2 RAM

ATI 5750 Graphics

Western Digital 320 GB SATA HD

LG SATA Combo Drive

Thermaltake TR2 600 Watt Power Supply

Cooler Master Vortex Plus CPU cooler

Summary of issues:

  • print to pdf generates blank documents
  • apturl is broken
  • Inserting a DVD doesn't launch the video player
  • Inserting an Audio CD doesn't launch Banshee
  • mint-x-theme doesn't support GTK3 (fixed in an update)
  • live-installer doesn't allow grub to be installed on another HDD than the one used for the installation
  • pae kernel not compatible with certain hardware (need more info)

apturl and print to pdf do not work (know bugs).

The 64 bit version of the Xfce ISO should follow in a day or two.
