The machine does boot. (though 'live' must be issued when 'not a COM32R image' appears on screen)
There are no panels, no option to add panels, and therefore no GUI to application launchers.
Now that it is being upgraded to the DVD version, the windows associated with the download lack all Gnome interface. They cannot be moved, minimized, or resized.
Selecting GNOME classic (no effects) put this machine back in business promptly.
This laptop has scarecly been supported by Ubuntu distros since 10.10, so getting this far without a struggle is actually rather promising.
