  Gateway (15.6’’ Laptop with core i5 2430M)
  Mint (older version)
  Works perfectly
What works:

Due to issues with the laptop, a duo boot with Windows 7 was not possible so opted for a full installation.

The installation went well but too its time due to the finishing up 'black screen'. Its a bit alarming to see it for half an hour but afterwards the install finished perfectly.

What doesn't work:

It actually took a couple of goes to get a complete install. Firstly the laptop didn't want a duo boot. Second time, the install stopped midway. Not sure why. Third time was successful.

What was done to make it work:

Preservere with the installation and not worry about seeing a blank black screen for half an hour as disc driver was still working.

Additional notes:

Do not be afraid, you are doing the laptop a service for putting on a better operating system. Ensure that everything you need is backed up beforehand as you may need to do a full installation and clear the hard drive.
