Nvidia-173 and Nvidia-96 driver not compatible with xorg version in Linux Mint 13.
You can install this drivers with downgrade xorg version.
Additional : My Cinnamon's Mutter problem solved with Nvidia-173 driver as follows in Linux Mint 13.
I use Nvidia 9500 GT

Step 1 : Add Oneiric Repo Sources List

Open sources.list file follwing code.Sources

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this line opened sources.list file and save it.

CODE: SELECT ALL
deb http://tr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main

Step 2 : Edit preferences file

Open preferences file with following code

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo gedit /etc/apt/preferences

Add this lines in opened preferences file and save it

CODE: SELECT ALL
Package: xorg xserver-xorg*
Pin: release a=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 1050

Step 3 : Downgrade Xorg Version

You can downgrade xorg with following code.

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

You can use alternatively following code for downgrade.

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xorg xserver-xorg-input-all xserver-xorg-video-all

Step 4 : Now you can install Nvidia 17 or Nvidia 96 driver with following codes.

For Nvidia 173

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo apt-get install nvidia-173

For Nvidia 96

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo apt-get install nvidia-96

Now you can create xorg.conf file

CODE: SELECT ALL
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Step 5 : Install Nvidia Settings

You can install nvidia-settings as follows if you have problem from repo version.

For 32 Bit

CODE: SELECT ALL
wget archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings_270.29-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i nvidia-settings*

For 64 Bit

CODE: SELECT ALL
wget archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings_270.29-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
