What works:

Everything so far on 32 bit Mint platform. Sun/Oracle JDK 6 & 7 work when installed in addition to the GCJ version.

What was done to make it work:

Changed BIOS settings to enable/disable/toggle some CPU extensions.

Additional notes:

The choice to install a 32bit kernel was made at a time when software wasn't limited by or taking advantage of a 64 bit architecture and it wasn't clear how well-supported or available device firmwares would be in 64 bit mode. It seems safe enough try and migrate to 64 bit Olivia (Mint 15) and check peripheral support before setting up many 64 bit software packages.
