Sound, touchpad, pretty much everything worked right out of install on my Dell Inspiron 7720 with Linux Mint, even the keyboard backlight.

The only real problem was overheating and a battery drain than ran the whole thing dead in just twenty minutes or so. Previous Windows 8 performance was north of three hours under typical usage.

Turns out that was the “Optimus” Nvidia GeForce 650M running like a banshee. Installed Bumblebee (<- ha!) with this tutorial: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1299 and things have been just fine ever since.
It still runs a bit warm (nothing serious) and I'm still groping at Linux concepts and terminology like a toddler playing with a pop-up-book, but this is the third time I've tried to switch to Linux as my day-to-day OS (previous efforts were with Ubuntu and Vector) and this one took. One week in and I'm very pleased. All hail Linux Mint.
