BENQ (flatbed scanner)
Mint (older version)
Everything now works now I have downloaded and installed Vuescan, right up to the full 1200 dpi (from http://www.hamrick.com/ costing $39.95/ <£30) You do not need any of the following if using Vuescan, these further instructions are only needed for Sane.
What doesn't work:
Although SANE detects the scanner I've only managed to get one scan out of it!! (Although this is better than previous Linux Distributions that only managed half a scan before seizing up.
What was done to make it work:
You need to install the driver manually to the system.
From the Terminal type "sudo nautilus" and go to /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf and double click that file.
Change the line...
to include the name of the driver file, (found on the cd that came with your scanner). It will have a name like u252v072.bin (the important bit is the first bit - u252 - the rest is just a version number.
On my disc it is found in MiraScan501U09/Drivers/Disk1/...
Using an application from http://www.hamrick.com/ (VueScan Scanning Software) the scanner works fine!! It is just a shame the Manufacturer will not supply this software as standard!!
