Sound Blaster 5.1 USB

  Creative (Sound card)
  Mint (older version)
Works fine with some minor problems
What works:

You can enjoy 5.1 sound after modifying some config files.

What doesn't work:

Neither IrDA nor a knob on the device do not seem to work.

The 5.1 profile does not apply automatically after USB card is plugged.

There's some crackling sound while playing music. Applying 5.0 profile seems to improve things a little but does not clear the sound completely.

What was done to make it work:

sudo gedit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

uncomment the following lines:
default-sample-rate = 44100
default-sample-channels = 2

and change the values to
default-sample-rate = 44800
default-sample-channels = 6

This enables 6 channels (5.1 surround) instead of 2ch (stereo).
If you plug the sound card after fresh system boot, only stereo profiles are available to select. In order to make surround profiles available you have to either restart your machine (1) or re-log-in (2) or run the following from terminal (3):

alsa force-reload
