What doesn't work:

Broadcom BCM4312 802.11/bg wireless LAN doesn't work out of the box on my Compaq Presario CQ40-410AU (x64 bit) laptop.

What was done to make it work:

Found fix here...
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

Instructions:
1. Open Terminal

  • Go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal or
  • Press ALT-F2 then type gnome-terminal

  • 2. Execute the following scripts
    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

    Additional notes:

The instructions on the website says to execute the following terminal script

    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
but Linux Mint detected that my pc (Compaq Presario CQ40-410AU) is using a different device and raised the following error
"An unsupported BCM4312 Low-Power (LP-PHY) device was found."
The advise was to use the b43 LP-PHY firmware installer package instead. Hence, the terminal script...
    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
