The 64 bit dvd edition worked well as a live usb, better as a solo install. Stuck to the same as of now. Updates went thru perfectly. Works with HDD in compatibility as well as AHCI mode and the AHCI set for performance or battery in the BIOS does make considerable difference. Installed the daemon for controlling keyboard shortcuts and worked perfectly too. Ensure latest version of BIOS installed - V1.90. I also upgraded to 2 Gb RAM and now the netbook is great. Good jjob Mint.. I tested fedora before, this is much better.
