This not being enabled makes session change practically impossible for someone using something like the Apple trackpad instead of a normal mouse.

There might be other companies selling buttonless trackpads one day. This was just an example. Fact is: enabling this option by default wouldn't hurt anyone and will not require a great effort by the team, but will potentially be useful for many people in the future and also make laptop/netbook users'life easier.
moral of the story... don't use apple with Linux?
