No, but I did notice the resize to 1024x768 [minimum supported resolution apparently] which is probably helpful to then avoid unusable isntaller dialog-boxes! =).

Ah sorry, I see what you mean. That's been broken for a while and there are many other features which only work with the guest additions. Using vbox on its own is only OK for quickly having a look at a distro, for anything serious the user relies on the additions.

I thought you were talking about the fact that we resize the display from 800x600 to 1024x768 in the live session.

It works fine for me with 6.1.16 and VMSVGA.

FWIW (release notes?) running in a VirtualBox 6.1.16 VM [and probably other recent versions], screen auto-resize only works with outdated VBoxVGA mode.
Installing the VirtualBox supplied Guest Additions from iso, then 'fixes' this. May warrant mention in release-notes.
