Ddcutil is used to query and change monitor settings.

ddcutil communicates with monitors implementing MCCS (Monitor Control Command Set). Normally, communication is performed using the DDC/CI protocol on the I2C bus. Alternatively, communication can be performed over USB as per the USB Monitor Control Class Specification.

Works for me on Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon X11 to adjust brightness of external monitor via keyboard brightness keys. Followed this guy's tutorial: 'https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2023/02/brightness-external-monitor-ubuntu/'. Only beef I have is it takes a sec to run each key press so it's pretty laggy compared to a built-in hardware brightness adjustment. But gets the job done.
