The mdadm utility can be used to create, manage, and monitor MD (multi-disk) arrays for software RAID or multipath I/O.

This package automatically configures mdadm to assemble arrays during the system startup process. If not needed, this functionality can be disabled.

Incredibly buggy, used it for raid 5 for two months, didn't go over a week without dying (and the hard drives are still perfect!)

Works great for software raid1-6 without (expensive) hardware raid controller!
