FreeCAD is an open-source parametric 3D modeler made primarily to design real-life objects of any size. Parametric modeling allows you to easily modify your design by going back into your model history and changing its parameters. It is designed to fit a wide range of uses including product design, mechanical engineering, architecture and 3D printing.
FreeCAD allows you to sketch geometry constrained 2D shapes and use them as a base to build other objects. It contains many components to adjust dimensions or extract design details from 3D models to create high quality production-ready drawings. it is a multiplatfom (Windows, Mac and Linux), highly customizable using the Python language. It reads and writes to many open file formats such as STEP, IGES, STL, SVG, DXF, OBJ, IFC, DAE and many others, making it possible to seamlessly integrate it into your workflow.
FreeCAD includes a modern Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, experimental CFD, BIM, Geodata workbenches, a Path (CNC) workbench, a robot simulation module that allows you to study robot movements and many more, and a rich collection of plugins and macros installable directly from within the application.
Its interactive scripting in Python feature is so attractive to me than I have started learning Python. As if you are in dialogue with FreeCAD, you can create forms. On the top of this, both presented and the ones you might write, Macros have a considerable potential to your conveniens. The more you go with it the more it opens its horizons to you.
Works perfectly on Linux Mint (using flatpak version). A must have tool for 3D design and express your creativity for 3D Printing !
Installs the latest without any problems, working perfectly or at least I haven't noticed any problems. Migrated from Windows to Linux, and I'm able to load up all my work just fine. All workbenches seem to work better than ever.
Installed de new version 0.21. It doesn`t launch from flatpack, i have to install from system package and install the older version 0.19. Then add the stable PPA then uptdate and now finaly run.
As an architecture, FreeCAD offers a big variety of solution for designers. Think out of the SolidBox.
FreeCAD source code is on Microsoft GitHub, installing anything from there is a major security threat and the developers officially do not care. The whole thing is to avoid.
Some bugs (examples: mark not possible, right mouse menu shows only "navigation bar",crashes,...) in LM20.1; I advise the "non-Flatpak" version!
Ab und zu ein Absturz alle 10min sichern dann ist man auf der sicheren Seite. (hier die Sysinfo:https://termbin.com/6q08)
