Xsnow is a X Window application that will snow on the desktop background. Santa and his reindeer will complete your festive-season feeling. Xsnow runs in GNOME, KDE, FVWM and desktops that are derived from those.

Great application however as of writing the version isn't up to date (1:2.0.9) and has graphical glitches. If you want to use this you will need to find an updated version (1.3) elsewhere which does work well on mint!
