RPG Maker VX ACE (steam version) on Linux Mint 17

LEVEL: Intermediate

Prerequirements:

You have installed PlayOnLinux and Wine 1.7.
You have installed timidity
You have experience in using PlayOnLinux.

Step 1

Download steam from http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/SteamSetup.exe

Step 2

Open PlayOnLinux, got to tools and click on "Manage Wine versions".
Install wine 1.4.1 and 1.7.21 from the x86 window and close the Manage window.

Step 3

Click on "Install a program" and choose unlisted, create a new virtualdrive with wine 1.4.1 and install these libaries (if promted click install when asked to install gecko):

dotnet20
dsound
dxdiag

vcrun2008
vcrun2010
vcrun6
wmp10
internal_install_fonts

After that, click on browse, install steam, log in download/install rpg maker and log out.

Step 4

Click on steam in the PlayOnLinux and choose configure.
Click on the Wine tab, and then on Registery Editor

Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam.
If not existent add DWriteEnable as a DWORD value.
Set DWriteEnable=0 if neccisary.

Close the editor, go to the General tab, and change your wineversion to 1.7.21

 

You can now use RPG Maker VX Ace.

bugs:

Testplay doesn't start/bm doesn't work correctly - This is a common problem in wine However there is a workaround: Create a shortcut via PlayOnLinux to your game.exe in your project folder and start your game this way with your normal wine). if you still have no sound, install the wmpcodec libary as well (and perhaps a codecpack).
