Every time I tried to type in the "pipe" symbol so I could do a grep command I received a greater than symbol. I looked about everywhere and I  finally found  the proper keyboard layout it's Intel Classmate. To change it go to  Menu>Preferences>Keyboard then select the layouts tab click on the keyboard model scroll to Intel and select Classmate PC finally click Ok then apply system wide. Hopefully this saves someone some time.
