I'm not a Linux newbie, but I'm always surprised at how little I know. I first began using Linux in 1994 with Slackware Linux. I used e-mail FTP to download a UUEncoded disc set from the University of NC (ibiblio) into my Acer 486DX2-66Mhz PC in my apartment bedroom via dialup on my 14.4Kbaud 3-com modem. This process took the better part of a week's worth of nights as I was employed and a student at the time. I later bought a CD-ROM drive so I could buy a Slackware CD, and the rest is history. 5 years ago I was developing professional Point-of-Sale applications in ANSI-C on SUSE (SLES) Linux for a major retailer. I've had my share of experience. However, there's always something new to learn and this is why I'm here...and why I'm using Linux Mint. It offers the best of both worlds; a user-friendly environment complete with the trappings of 'systemd', (oh, how I miss initd) and the under-the-hood functionality I crave and need. Because of my history with Slackware, and the fact I'm a cheapskate with a low-end laptop, I'm using XFCE (a.k.a. Cholesterol-free) desktop. I don't have the fancy, nor schmancy, utilities or hardware most other users have which makes every day a challenge and a pleasure with Linux.
