I am a ham radio operator and a telecommunications engineer by trade. I was born in March 1986. As a child my passion for radio started when I received my first AM transistor radio, which I loved dearly. I would spend countless hours during the night trying to receive stations from distant locations. I even went as far as writing letters to many of these stations to let them know I was able to hear their broadcasts using a Cold War era transistor radio. As time progressed, I had gone as far as getting into FRS, GMRS and CB. While in high school I had expanded my DXing experience to shortwave as that too provided countless hours of fun and enjoyment...that hasn’t changed to this very day!

After high school I enlisted in the United States Army as a 94D, which is an Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer and was later changed to Telecommunications Engineer. While in the Service I had learned to troubleshoot all sorts of telecommunications equipment, to exclusively include radios of all sorts. Upon getting out of the military on August 11, 2006 under honourable conditions I had returned to Canada, where I began my ham radio experience by getting my license. When I am not on the radio, I am running my business, which is Arctic Telecommunications, now based in Dixonville, Alberta with planned offices to be established in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Iqaluit, Nunavut and Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Here are the various services that my business performs: Aviation Two-Way Radios, Bell ExpressVu Satellite, Christian Satellite Television, Citizens Band (CB) Radios, Computer Hardware Repair, Computer Networking, Computer Operating System Support, Computer Software Support, DirecTV Satellite, Dish Network Satellite, DishNet Satellite Internet, Exede Satellite Internet, Free-To-Air Satellite, FRS Two-Way Radios, Full Power AM Radio Stations, Full Power FM Radio Stations, Full Power TV Stations, GMRS Two-Way Radios, Ham/Ametuer Radio, Home Theatre and Sound Systems, HughesNet Satellite Internet, Low Power AM Radio Stations, Low Power FM Radio Stations, Low Power TV Stations, Over-The-Air Antennas, Satellite / Landline Telephones, Satellite Uplink Stations, Shaw Direct Satellite, Ship / Land Based Radar, Shortwave Radio Stations, StarBand Satellite Internet, UHF Two-Way Radios, VHF Two-Way Radios, and XRS Two-Way Radios

I also do a lot of work for churches such as installing low-power, license free AM and FM stations, Christian satellite as well as a lot of computer work. On my free time I devote a well sectioned period of time building radios for personal enjoyment and pleasure. I spend a good deal of time working on Linux programs, as well as helping make the Linux operating system more pleasurable for others to use. I am also a supporter of Free-To-Air satellite television as well as other hobbyist television systems.

In regards to Linux, I made a 100%, cold-turkey switch to Linux on 16 November 2011 after fighting with a laptop that was running Windows Vista. I struggled to get anything done on it, and with my knowledge of computers being good enough to learn more, I made the switch over to Linux. Yes, I grew up using computers and was exposed much of the time to DOS and Windows operating systems, but I never had much experience with Linux, other than command line interface many years ago. So, I started out with Ubuntu 11.10 which impressed me. On Christmas Day 2011 I had found Mint and decided to give it a try, as I was not much of a fan using the Unity desktop. I started out with Mint 12 Lisa and since then I have used it as a primary OS for both personal and work purposes.

In the three years since I started using Linux full time, I can definitely say that my ability to fully utilize my hardware has grown tremendously, as well as my understanding of how computers work. I have also developed an appreciation of Open Source software as it is far greater and more supported than most of the paid software many users have with Windows/Mac. I have made it my personal ambition to get as many people onto Linux as possible, and so far it has become quite successful. I am very pleased with Mint and the way it allows me to do my daily tasks as well as run my business. All of my employees use Linux Mint on their computers, and our productivity is better than ever before.

I do recommend Linux to anyone that has a desire to better their computer skills! fII am a ham radio operator and a telecommunications engineer by trade. I was born in March 1986.
