Mono is a platform for running and developing applications based on the ECMA/ISO Standards. Mono is an open source effort led by Xamarin. Mono provides a complete CLR (Common Language Runtime) including compiler and runtime, which can produce and execute CIL (Common Intermediate Language) bytecode (aka assemblies), and a class library.

This is a metapackage and pulls in the Mono runtime, development tools and all libraries.

Install this package if you want to run software for Mono or Microsoft .NET which you are not installing from a Debian package.

For packagers: This package is not to be used as dependency for packages! You should build-depend on cli-common-dev and the needed libraries instead.

All program lanquages are based on other programming languages DUH! hell C# is based on C and Java, and both of which are not Microsoft. Anyways C3 is one of the best programming languages around and is as multi-platform as java so awesome stuff

Mono is not Microsoft! It says right in the description: Mono is an open source effort led by Novell. Install this package if you want to run software for Mono *OR* Microsoft .NET...

Works great! Please bugger off about the microsoft bulls***! It's explicitly not microsoft and open-source, or will you uninstall OpenJDK as well, 'cause that is based on Oracle!

There is no doubting the quality of what has been produced by the Mono project but... it's based on a Microsoft technology even if it an open standard
