Logisim is an educational tool for designing and simulating digital logic circuits. With its simple toolbar interface and simulation of circuits as you build them, it is simple enough to facilitate learning the most basic concepts related to logic circuits. With the capacity to build larger circuits from smaller subcircuits, and to draw bundles of wires with a single mouse drag, Logisim can be used (and is used) to design and simulate entire CPUs for educational purposes.

Note: Logisim development stopped since 2011. You should use one of the newer continuations of this great project, which do the same things and more (literally forks of the original). I can recommend "Logisim Evolution".

A great digital circuit simulator! I have been using it for over a year in the digital electronics class I teach at the University of Brasilia, and I highly recommend it.

Great package. Has a few bugs however, and it is no longer updated, so logisim evolution might be worth looking into.

Excellent package. I used it for 3 years to teach parts of Computer Architecture, but it can also be used to show many of the operations that happen 'under the hood' on a programming course.
