kate
"You need to replace xed if you are seriously using your text editor. Kate is a faboulous replacement, that handles big files without hiccups, can manage sessions and has incredible integrated functionality. Also works great as a replacement for Notepad++ if coming from Windows."
5
samba
"Simply a necessity if you want to use the SAMBA protocol to share files (for example for Kodi) on your network. No issues yet except user error, the issues you might face will be because of your network, not because of this program."
5
org.audacityteam.Audacity
"If you want to use Audacity, please do, its a solid audio editor. However, the download here is totally broken. On launch, the error "Audacity is starting up.... is not responding" happens (version 3.7.0)"
1
ffmpeg
"ffmpeg essential part of soooo many applications. Almost everything handling video. And it works flawlessly in the background. If needed for quick commandline video editing, it excels in its capabilities and performance too. Only hard to learn, but using a generative AI model will help gettings things done."
5
git
"Version control is crucial. Not only for code, but also sometimes for other personal projects. Git works offline for personal things, has great online hosting options (Github, Gitlab) and is just the most useful."
5
htop
"Never heard anyone not recommend htop over top, and couldn't agree more. It has become the de-facto replacement"
5
org.stellarium.Stellarium
"Fantastic presentation of up-to-date astronomical data. Extremly useful for hobby astronomers. Track stars, satellites and other objects, useful to know where exactly they will be visible in the future. Even just if you are just interested in what you have seen in the sky, just fire up Stellarium and check it out."
5
com.discordapp.Discord
"Discord has become an ubiquitous platform for gaming communities, developers and others alike. If you want to join them, you need it. And it's pretty good too! The Flatpak is the right choice for something like Discord. No need accessing anything else, since everything is online on their servers anyway."
5
gpick
"Lovely color picker. The small preview allows exact picking of anything on screen. History, several different color spaces and formats to copy, and a ton more advanced features that I don't use, but maybe you will!"
5
hypnotix
"Unfortunately this is a poorly maintained package. Channels don't work anymore and it ships with a non-working yt-dlp from 2 years ago (WTF!). That should be the whole point of this application. Because the streaming landscape is everchanging, such a project would require frequent update and changes, but unfortunately it seems more or less abandoned. (on Mint 21)"
1
logisim
"Note: Logisim development stopped since 2011. You should use one of the newer continuations of this great project, which do the same things and more (literally forks of the original). I can recommend "Logisim Evolution"."
3
simplescreenrecorder
"In fact, a very simple screen recorder. Still provides enough functionality to record only parts of the screen, frame rate and other small configurations, thus covering all needs."
5
qalculate-gtk
"A better calculator than more than half of other applications. Mainly, because it works great in a **multi-lingual** context. You may need to deal with copying numbers that may contain either "dots" or "commas" as decimal seperators. Qalculate provides configuration to deal with it. See the required settings here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2508130#p2508130"
5
minecraft-launcher
"Fully functional game launcher for one of the most influential games of the 21st century. Launcher is completely sufficient for normal gameplay, but also for more configuration like modding (with profiles, java options) as long as you are comfortable using files to install mods."
5
winetricks
"A necessary and outright essential collection for navigating Wine and running Windows applications. Addendum: Do not install package from here, as it is SEVERELY outdated (3 years old)."
2
com.github.xournalpp.xournalpp
"Fully-suited and ergonomic tool for all PDF annotation needs. I use it for annotating handed-in assignments at university. The Linux Mint version is too buggy to fully recommend though: Crashing with Unicode characters, a broken by default Flatpak installation (can be fixed though, see review by Peppermintstarman) and issues with certain PDFs leaves me not fully recommending this unless you can deal with these issues. By all means, please TRY IT, but if you do have an alternative you are satisfied with, stay with it."
3
dolphin
"Fantastic file manager replacement for the default Nemo, allowing much more customizability and supporting more quality of life features (group by) out of the box. It it also great for giving more familarity to Windows users if you want to migrate someone."
5
com.github.reds.LogisimEvolution
"Indispensable logic circuit designer with everything you need, being both intuitive for small work and capable for complex circuits. It is heavily used in university contexts, and excels as an educational tool. Thanks!"
5
kpat
"Awesome configurable card game! I can only speak for playing the "Freecell" variant, but it has everything needed and integrates both good auto capabilities as well as allows completely disabling them."
5
xed
"A very basic text editor. Unfortunately the main issue using Xed is that it can easily lead to dataloss. It will freeze up completely with files that have long lines of text, requiring it to be killed and losing all unsaved documents and/or changes."
3
notepadqq
"Please note that this project is not maintained anymore as per https://github.com/notepadqq/notepadqq: > This project is not actively maintained anymore. New maintainers are welcome. Also, as others have mentioned, it crashes. While there _are_ workarounds, I am forced to give a broken package a 1-star review. It should be removed from the repository."
1
yt-dlp
"Very out of date and thus broken. From 2022, it's 2024 now and YouTube has changed a lot as well as the other decoders. I don't know how this was installed, since I didn't do manually."
2
com.github.tchx84.Flatseal
"Flatseal should be installed per default, since more and more software is using Flatpaks and it is pretty much a requirement (sadly) to get Flatpak apps working when they want to interact with the system. Regarding Flatseal, it's good for us, but since you pretty much need to use it, it should be more intuitive for non-technical users"
4
com.github.zocker_160.SyncThingy
"A pleasant way to access and maintain Syncthing, without all the extra GUI re-implementation other projects have. ...If you get the Flatpak working (my tip: don't use the autostart option in the app, but instead just add it to startup applications)"
4
org.keepassxc.KeePassXC
"KeePassXC is the best of the local password managers. Lovely user interface, great organization and state-of-art security features. Very active supported project as well. The .kdbx file can easily be synced using Syncthing across different devices. Flatpak version is good (and has more bugs fixed) if you don't need the browser plugin like me, everything else runs fine."
5
net.supertuxkart.SuperTuxKart
"Lovely community game. Can be played together with mobile players (and maybe even a better experience on there). Lacks good controls implementation with keyboard and mouse however. I can't use my mouses special buttons, and it warns to not use the SHIFT key because it can't detect other keys then. This should just not happen."
4
net.meshlab.MeshLab
"Extensive and useful tool for mesh processing. This Flatpak version is also 3 years more up-to-date!!"
