Description:

MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. It can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies.

Another big feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, DirectFB, but also SDL.

Not all of the upstream code is distributed in the source tarball. See the README.Debian and copyright files for details.

5 Like VLC but with a tradeoff -- it uses about half the system resources but the interface is clunky. If your system can't keep up with VLC, mplayer is awesome.

2 Is installed in Mint-XFCE by default. But Mplayer failed from time to time where other video players (as the lightweight player Parole) did the job. Playing with the settings didn´t help. So for me: No thanks.

4 M-player is what all other players aim to be. Easy to use, POWERFUL and yet still lightweight enough to be used on low-spec systems. Works just as good from CLI as from GUI, and it comes more or less fully loaded for any kind of file you ever what to play.

5 Great for playing media of any kind, also has a powerful encoder built in. Also has many output drivers.

4 This is the default player that I use. I'd recommend using a front end like Gnome Mplayer or smplayer. Essentially, this has plays nearly all video formats out of the box.

5 At the moment the best player available. Plays almost everything.

5 MPlayer is the best video player for Linux. It even beats VLC as long as you are not going to broadcast video over your network. Recommended is to use also add a separate GUI such as SMPlayer to further enhance the experience. All in all, Mplayer is the most feture-complete, resource-efficent movie player out there.
