gimp
"I used gimp many times to enhance digital b/w photographs from a microfilm vieewer's screen. These are terribly overexposed in the middle and underexposed as you get to the sides. The recepe is from a single layer image use duplicate layer, on this layer use filter>blurr>gaussian blurr and set the pixelsize large enough so the characters or handwritings are blended into the background and then use a combine layers I think it was in the layers pane where the function was a mathematical devide and the result was a perfectly white background with acceptable black text. It was good enpough to print it and not waiste to much dye or toner from all tehe shady parts. you have to image>flatten image before you can save to jpg or other single layer image types, but the program tells you that. I looked for ways to custom make that into a single command, but I didn't find it. you can't win'm all!l for simple stuff (cropping resizing even converting to other formats printing renaming etc. I use XNView"
