xfce4
This package is a metapackage; it depends on the core packages of the Xfce4 desktop environment and recommends some extra Xfce4 packages. If you intend to use Xfce4 and want the full experience then installing this package and the packages it Recommends is a great place to start.
If you just want to pick and choose the core components then feel free to remove this package.

It works great on LMDE 4! I hope we can get the newer version (4.14 or above) in the Software Manager soon.

I haven't tried MATE yet, but compared to Cinnamon xfce seems to work better. Most notably I could install LINUX from an USB-Stick running xfce on btrfs, while a USB-Stick with Cinnamon always crashed trying to install on btrfs
I like the older basic look on older machines, very low resource user, even on top of Linux Mint Cinnamon
XFCE is always friendly with old hardwares, But its not recommended to install alongside with any other DE. Processes of the another session keep running and keep utilizing resources. better to keep two os with same home partition
The BEST classic desktop IMO. Very stable and fairly light on resources. Beginners are strongly encouraged to shed their 'fear of change' and to customize the panels for quickly launching favorite apps - it's easy! Together with the Whisker menu you have fast and easy access to everything. The traditional menu is always available by right clicking on the desktop.
I love it. It's usually the first thing that I install on Linux systems that don't come with Xfce
Simple, efficient, extremly reliable and good looking on LinuxMint with the great LinuxMintMenu (less handsome on Xubuntu); our favorite choice on older Computers which ran WinXP or Vista before - Xfce changes them from snails to horses on office tasks; even economic RAM usage on virtual machines.
Xfce desktop environment is light, very stable and very fast. Also very good integrations and fast using Gnome and KDE applications or GTK or Qt written applications ;) So far, I didn't encounterd any bugs on this desktop environment, I did encounter bugs on the KDE, Gnome, Mate and Cinnamon desktop environments but not one so far in Xfce.
I've been using xfce as my main Linux desktop environment for over ten years now and it's still my favorite of the lot. It has a very small install size, and is very responsive and quick! This is the customizable desktop environment that you've been looking for!
Beste Desktop-Umgebung für Ubuntu/Mint! Man kann nahezu alles(!) nach eigenen Wünschen gestalten. Für Rechner mit schwacher Hardware optimal, aber auch auf High-End Geräten richtig klasse !
