featureful graphical frontend for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy)

Xsane can be run as a stand-alone program or through the GIMP image manipulation program. In stand-alone mode, xsane can save an image to a file in a variety of image formats, serve as a frontend to a fax program, or send an image to a printer.

SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is free and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The current source code is written to support several operating systems, including GNU/Linux, OS/2, Win32 and various Unices and is available under the GNU General Public License (commercial applications and backends are welcome, too, however).

Incredibly, this application does not allow you to easily scan part of the scanner surface: want a copy of a receipt? Open your full page scan and crop in an image editor. If it does offer the basic ability to crop, that is well hidden. Even bare-bones Document Scanner has this functionality. Also, the interface, with its myriad of windows, is a disaster.

Minor compatibility issue on a 5.8 kernel in the 20.1 edge iso, between xsane and the repo version of sane-utils. Xsane claims it is starting the scan but the scanner does nothing, so Xsane waits forever. Fixed by installing the latest sane-utils from gitlab.

Awesome is a bit of an overstatement, but, easy to set up and works when sometimes other things do not. Easy to use, produces good results, so it gets a 5.

The program windows are scattered, messy. Difficult and confusing to use. As janelas do programa são espalhadas, bagunçadas. Difícil e confuso de usar.

A good scanning tool with a lot of functions (maybe to complicated for some users). It allowed me using my scanner again that wasn't supported by windows7+ any more (I am glad i did not have to dup it because it still works fine). Unluckily the preview-window always has to be opened complicatedly using the menu.

@ craigmx5 : This app is not broken. You have to choose on overview window (where there is big xsane logo) the output on pre-selection zone (at the bottom of the window).

This app is broken under Linux Mint 19.1. No matter the settings, a scan will only show a partial full page (1/4). I removed the software and went back to Simple Scan, which works fine, if fewer options.

Good Scanner, does the job, maybe the UI could be improved upon opening, it's a bit like GIMP in that it hits you with too many initial options.

Running LM 18.3 with a wireless Brother DCP-J172W printer/scanner. Everything about the printer works perfectly. Installed sane because simple scan couldnt connect. Luanched xsane and of course no devices found. printer/scanner is connected wirelessly on 192.168.0.4, shows up in the devices, prints fine. looking for another program as this one failed miserably.

Good Scanning Tool

xsane used as a stand alone application works great under linux mint 17.3 with usb-flatbed-scanner canon lide 35. Especially the sliders for controling brightness and contrast do their job in comparison to the tiny solution called "simple-scan". Only the handling could be optimized, for example I would whish to change the scanfieldsize directly on the main window, not on the options-window. And I would appreciate to store ONE single output pdf-file for a batch of several scanned pages instead of each scan stored on its own. But that is only a hint, not a complaint. All in all this scanning-tool does a great job!

BEFEORE LM 17.3, worked wonderfully with Canon LiDE 210; after 17.3, spotty enough to be considered nonfunctional. There seem to be quite a few comments on these problems regarding the 14.04 kernel. Anything dependig upon the libsane library fails.
