I used this same package before to call my girlfriend in China from the United States. Even though it defaulted to calling her Skype account, I could at least select her phone number from a dropdown menu and call. This time, her number is nowhere in sight. I'm going to install Skype 4 from the web site and hope that works better. I normally prefer using Mint packages because the Mint interface keeps them so nice and neat and categorized, but this package has lost all value for me.

Now that MS bought it, let's hope they don't ditch or forget the Linux version... The slow development has been a drawback, though. At this moment, a bug both in 32 & 64bit makes Skype lose the login information on startup, randomly, it seems.

What I noticed is that rythmbox is hogging my sound devices and when it's on skype isn't working properly. If you have the same thing make sure you kill rythmbox. Interface looks very outdated, but it does have all the main features (Webcam, Chat, SMS, SkypeOut, 3-way-conferences, etc). I loved the clean, spartan interface (i hate the bloated windows one). Too bad is not open source. At least the interface could be.

If one is using it the right way one can make a great benefit out of it and for no fees included. However, some services are indeed not free of charge but they are worse the money. If you don't have it and use it try it.

Terrible webcam support though, and it lacks the majority of features of it's windows and mac counterparts, like plug-ins and add-ons. For calls, you're better off using the landline-dialable Skype number (which you can setup on their site) and for IM, there are less clunky protocols out there. Skype is notorious for dropping IM (not just in the Linux version)
