qtpfsgui
"Weird name, but good HDR tonemapper. Does also a good job to enhance dark or dull photos to a much better result than just level corrections in image editors."
5
rawtherapee
"User friendly raw converter. Much better than RawStudio."

gthumb
"Presently the best image viewer, since it got a real folder tree (didn't have one a few years ago) and some EXIF editing features. Unfortunately it lost the image preview in the properties pane below the tree pane and the tagging is not really working to my satisfaction. Several competitors which were better are much worse now."
4
gparted
"Very useful and easy to use to partition the HDD"
5
firefox
"Unreliable... tends to become the msie of the free world. Qupzilla is better, iron is better, arora is better, midori is better, seamonkey was better, epiphany was better, galeon was better, Opera is still THE best although they like to botch up former features from time to time."

inkscape
"Has a few very annoying manners, but there is no real competition. If you can get accustomed to it, it does a good job, so I use it."
4
minitube
"It did work well a few years ago, since at least 2 years, it doesn't work any more, probably boycotted by youtube."

libreoffice
"Software manager pretends it's not installed, but synaptic knows it IS. Liberoffice might be useful at times, but like every other office package, it's bloated. In most cases, Abiword and gnumeric do the job very well."

acroread
"Avoiding anything adobe like the plague. Moreover it's horribly bloated, wasting resources even on a powerful machine is still a waste, Evince and epdfviewer are much better and free. Need to fill forms or write above ANY pdf ? take inkscape"

"mono is out of question, re-organizing my files THEIR way is out of question, moving my pics to the home folder is out of question"
