gnome-screensaver
"A standard screensaver program, with all the features you'd expect, with typical Linux customizability to boot. My only critism would be the entirely unaesthetic animations it comes with."
4
virtualbox-3.1
"No VM I've used matches virtualbox in terms of ease of use and usability. Very fast VM and very compatible with a large range of OS's, especially when combined with the Virtualbox guest additions."
5
skype
"The gold standard in internet telephony. Fully featured and with a significant user base, which of course increases it's value."
4
rhythmbox
"Very fast, very simple, and with plenty of features and plugins. The last.fm access is a wonderful feature, allowing you to discover new music for free. Works well with the iPod, and is frankly better than iTunes. Also supports access to music stores."
4
pidgin
"Beautifully clean interface, and easily the number one IM client if you use multiple IM accounts. The lack of support for video and microphone conversations is probably it's biggest downfall. Apart from the support for multiple IM systems, the plugins are a good reason to use Pidgin over other IM clients."
4
openoffice.org
"OOo is probably the best open source office suite, however it is a long way behind Microsoft Office, both in terms of features and speed."
3
gedit
"A text editor swiss army knife. Whatever you want to do, write notes, program Java, or whatever else, this text editor can be customised to your needs. A brilliantly simple and clean interface, forget Notepad++, this is Notepad#."
5
thunderbird
"Fully featured, but not anything spectacular. Roughly equal to Outlook, Thunderbird doesn't really bring anything special to the world of Mail cilents."
3
keepassx
"Plenty of features that enhance security and ease of use. What makes Keepass most powerful is it's customizaiblity and features like a password generator."
4
gparted
"The best, clearest and most simple partition viewer and editor out there. The interface in gparted makes the type and size of your partitions very clear."
4
firefox
"The most fully featured browser by a long way, mainly because of the plethora of addons to choose from. However, not the fastest or most stable browser out there either."
4
wine
"Most programs have complications and many bug when run through Wine; getting programs to work with Wine is almost an art form. This application is impressive, but has a long way to go before being truly useful."
2
brasero
"Probably the best CD/DVD burning application available; very clean interface and easyily configured."
5
mintbackup
"The simple interface is great, however, it lacks the ability to do scheduled or automatic backups, nor can you use it to backup to an internet location."
2
compizconfig-settings-manager
"This settings manager allows you to change pretty much every aspect of compiz. However, it could be a little more user friendly; some of the options are not immediately obvious as to their function."
4
compiz
"Superb; very fast and yet with mind blowing effects."
4
transmission
"Lightweight, fully featured and yet with a very simple, though customizable, interface."
